ExCAL were engaged by Kier Western to undertake a site investigation at the disused Caerphilly Fire Station. A storage tank was being removed, and ExCAL were required to conduct on-site chemical tests around the tank using enzyme-based kits.

ExCAL were later commissioned to undertake a site investigation in sections of the car park of the Sainsbury's store on Colchester Avenue, Cardiff. It was proposed to extend the existing Sainsbury's store, originally built in the 1980s, over the car park situated to the eastern side of the site.

Kier Western required the investigation in order to determine the ground conditions at the site to allow design of the foundations for the extension. The site has a long development history; it was previously occupied by a coal fired power station (now demolished) and an old Victorian tip.

ExCAL's site investigation included trial pits and boreholes, and subsequent laboratory analysis of samples.
