St John's Washery, Maesteg
ExCAL were commissioned to undertake a study of the St. John's Washery site, Maesteg. The area has been subjected to intensive historical industrial use including an iron works, intensive mining for coal, over 90 coke ovens, two landfill sites and large colliery tips.

The risk assessment allowed pragmatic decisions to be made with regard to remediation options and clean up targets.

A comprehensive ecological survey was undertaken to identify the presence of any sensitive flora or fauna and a detailed traffic impact assessment was also carried out.

Detailed consultations were undertaken with the Regulatory Authorities to develop ecological mitigation and enhancement options.

The design for the scheme included measures to stabilise extensive shallow mining, remediate a former landfill site, treat organic contamination by use of bioremediation and provision of infrastructure.

Extensive consultation was undertaken with the council members, local pressure groups and the general public.
