ExCAL are experienced in a wide range of ecological areas with an in-house ornithologist and ecologists.

Freshwater and Marine Ecology
ExCAL has supervised and undertaken numerous marine and freshwater surveys. Examples include benthic and invertebrate studies.
Botanical Monitoring
ExCAL have skills in flora and habitat surveys including Phase 1 habitat surveys and National Vegetation Classification (NVC) surveys.
Protected Species Work
ExCAL carries out work involving protected species from surveys to advice on wildlife law and mitigation measures
Examples of protected species on which ExCAL advise include:
- Birds
- Breeding and wintering.
- WeBS counts and migrants.
- Mammals
- Badgers, bats, dormice and water voles.
- Amphibians and reptiles
- Accredited agents of Natterjack Toads (Bufo calamita)
- Aquatic monitoring
Benthic surveys can be carried out according to the BMWP Biotic Index.
